A deferred annuity is designed to help you accumulate funds for your retirement in a safe and secure way. There are two types of deferred annuities: Fixed and Fixed-Index Annuities.
Fixed Deferred Annuities
You purchase a fixed deferred annuity with either a single payment or a series of payments. Your money earns interest at a fixed rate that will never drop below a minimum rate guaranteed by the issuing company. That makes a fixed deferred annuity a safe choice for accumulating funds for retirement.
Fixed Indexed Deferred Annuities
You purchase a fixed indexed deferred annuity with either a single payment of series of payments the same as a fixed annuity. The credited interest return during the accumulation period is tied to an index of economic performance, typically an equity index such as the Standard & Poor's 500. This provides superior returns to fixed-income investments during periods of peak market performance. In order to protect principal during market downturns, indexed annuities have minimum guarantees of income and credited interest. Other features act as buffers on variations in credited interest. The participation rate limits the degree to which variations in the index are allowed to affect the credited interest rate. Different formulas for calculating changes in the index itself also affect the degree of index variation. The result of this complicated structure is that, while indexed annuities fall between fixed and variable annuities on the risk/return spectrum and contain elements of both, they are closer to fixed annuities in practice.
Funds Grow Tax Deferred
Meanwhile, your money grows tax deferred, which means you don't pay taxes on your earnings until you withdraw money from your annuity. The taxes you would normally pay on interest earnings stay in your annuity and compound to help the value of your account grow faster.

Many annuities provide access to your money through penalty-free withdrawals. And, when you choose, you can turn the value of your annuity into a stream of income that will last as long as you live.

If you're looking for a way to protect your retirement savings and want to avoid investments tied to the stock market, a fixed deferred annuity may be the right choice for you.
